Tobacco - New Retail Authorization Requirement

The Ministry of Health has asked ABLE BC to remind members of the new retail registration requirements under the Tobacco Act.

Under the new Tobacco Act, all tobacco retailers will be required to be authorized to sell tobacco.

Tobacco retailers registered before September 1, 2007, will be contacted by the ministry to verify their business information before being issued a Tobacco Retail Authorization certificate for each retail location by June 1, 2008. Retail operators can continue to use their PST Certificate of Registration as authorization to sell tobacco at retail until May 31, 2008.

For those operators who have cigarette machines in their establishments, you will also have to register as an Authorized Tobacco Retailer for that machine. For those machines that may be owned by a third party company, both the business with the machine and the third party company have to register as Authorized Tobacco Retailers. The certificates from the Ministry are to be displayed on the machine.
