BCGEU liquor store ad campaign distorts the facts
Vancouver, July 28, 2009 - A B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union ad campaign that starts today is resorting to misinformation and unfair attacks on B.C.'s independent liquor stores.
"The BCGEU is distorting the facts," said Kim Haakstad, Executive Director of Alliance of Beverage Licensees. "Contrary to the BCGEU ads, the B.C. government receives more revenues when it wholesales product to independent stores than when it sells in its own stores. That means more money for healthcare and education."
Non-government liquor sales accounted for over half of the Liquor Distribution Branch's wholesale division last year. Government Liquor Stores accounted for only 40.7%.
"B.C.'s 662 independent liquor stores are pillars of local communities," said Al Arbuthnot, President of ABLE-BC and owner of Fox's Reach Liquor Store in Maple Ridge. "Many stores are small family owned businesses that sponsor local sports teams, charities, and community activities. Community support and exceptional service has lead to an up tick in our industry's overall market share."
"When you strip away the misinformation, the BCGEU ad campaign can be seen as desperate attempt to shore up falling sales at the union-run liquor stores," said Haakstad.
Total liquor sales at government stores have fallen 28% from 2002/03 to 2008/09, while sales at independent stores grew by 45% over the same period.
Haakstad credits the convenience of neighbourhood stores staying open with late hours and on Sundays, the advantage of chilled wines and beers, and the wide selection of competitively priced products.
The Alliance of Beverage Licensees is the industry advocate for pubs, bars and independent liquor stores throughout the province. ABLE BC works with stakeholders and members to ensure a responsible liquor industry.
